Student Testimonials
“The whole concept of meeting with a school demographically different from yours is a really interesting idea. In an America as polarized as it is today, a platform such as Mismatch abets democracy.”
— 11th Grade Student, Washington
“I liked multiple things about Mismatch! I would say that the main thing that I liked about it was getting the opportunity to have an actual conversation with people, without any distractions. Especially because many teenagers who live in this generation often prefer to use their phones instead of talking to people around them. It was also great getting to know people who lived in a different area, and to hear opinions of people other than myself. I think that this is an especially good activity for shy/reluctant folks, because it may give them more comfort speaking due to knowing that it is for a good purpose.”
— 9th Grade Student, North Carolina
“I got to meet a kid from a different background with a totally different perspective. It expanded my views and I learned a lot.”
— 11th Grade Student, Washington
“I liked how you could see who you were talking to. I think it’s important to the conversation.”
— 12th Grade Student, Arizona
“I really liked that the suggested questions showed up on the side. I also really liked the option of moving on to another question before the timer ran out.”
— 7th Grade Student, Massachusetts
“I strongly believe that it is important to be provided with opinions other than your own; along with having avenues to gain perspective on the lives of others.”
— 8th Grade Student, North Carolina
“I thought it was a pretty clean interface. I also enjoyed that even though you had timer, we could choose when to move on to the next part of the conversation..”
— 11th Grade Student, Washington
“I liked how there were questions on the side to start us off and help us guide our conversation.”
— 9th Grade Student, Pennsylvania
“…many [students] had personal stories they shared which opened my eyes to how much legislation is affecting people’s lives.”
— 12th Grade Student, New Jersey
“I liked the ability to talk to students from a different state …. to see that they had a similar perspective to me, even though we have a highly different background. I think if done more often the conversations could truly be a great experience to change perspective and have discussions rather than debates.”
— 11th Grade Student, California
“I like Mismatch because I was informed of how different some places can be, compared to where we live. I was so accustomed to seeing certain things here, that I had not imagined the possibility of different things happening in other areas.”
— 11th Grade Student, California
“I liked how you can see the people you were talking to face to face over the computer. It makes you feel more connected with the other student and you can have an easy conversation that seems to be more personal.”
